This mulmul (fine, soft cotton, muslin) was printed by hand with carved wooden blocks in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The process is known as hand block-printing and the skills of a block carver and those of the printers are passed down over generations within a family. The printer dips the block into a dye tray and then stamps the block onto the fabric with a ’thump thump’ of the hand at the centre of the block to ensure even printing. This process is carefully repeated across the fabric. This fabric is from a family-owned workshop that was established in 1963 established to revive this craft using both traditional and contemporary designs. The quatrefoil pattern is printed with a lovely turquoise dye on white muslin. There maybe tiny variations in the printing but these are its charm and show it was hand-made. Hand-wash or dry-clean.
