Since starting a small workshop in Kolkata in 2001 Sabyasachi Mukherjee has in the last two decades risen to become India’s most revered designer. His passion for Indian textiles and craft and his meticulous attention to detail are evident in his collections. Sabya is deeply committed to reviving and preserving traditional craft skills and as well as employing thousands of artisans directly he has a foundation to support artists and around a decade ago he instigated the “Save the Saree” project. This soft muslin sari is from that project and is a superb jamdani (muslin) hand-woven in Bengal. It is gentle piece infused with the skill of the artisans. Sabya encourages you to “wear a sari and save a weaver ‘and considers India’s fine handlooms to be the epitome of sustainable luxury. This piece comes packaged in lovely tin. Hand wash or dry clean.
The sari (also saree), which is a Sanskrit word meaning strip of cloth, is an iconic symbol of India’s grace and is still worn daily by millions of women. The draping and wrapping lengths of unstitched cloth dates back to ancient times. Each unique sari tells a story about the community that made it and those who wear it. There are distinct regional variations in materials, colours, motifs, embellishments and in how the sari is draped. Traditionally, the sari was hand-woven and could be worn straight off the loom. Today there is strong commitment by India’s leading designers and craft advocates to protect the sari legacy and to revive and support an Indian artisan aesthetic.
