Only a few potters create the red and black items. They use a process call reduction firing where those items they want to be darker are put into a tightly sealed container which is then fired, due the lack of oxygen the items turn black. The most famous village producing black pottery is Longpi in the state of Manipur in the North East of India. This pottery is made by the Tangkhul Naga tribe completely by hand using moulds and tools, without the use of a potter’s wheel.
