Brass offering bowl (tinned on the inside) dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, obtained in Leh, Ladakh. Originally from Tibet. Offering bowls are one of the central practices of Tibetan Buddhism. Usually, a row of seven bowls is filled with water, which represent the purity of the Buddha, and are placed before the shrine in a temple or in front of a home altar. It is thought using offering bowls daily is a way of accumulating virtue and merit and is an effective way of cultivating generosity. It is also believed that this practice is done not for the benefit of the Buddha but rather for the transformative effect on the devotee. The bowls are also sometimes filled with flowers, incense, sweets, or fruits. There are some dents due to its age, please see images.
