Brass surmadhan (eyeliner pot and applicator) from the early 1900s, possibly of Middle Eastern origin. Surma (also called kohl or kajal) is an eye cosmetic that has been used since ancient times. It was originally used as protection against eye ailments and there was also a belief that darkening around the eyes would protect one from the harsh rays of the sun. It was used by women, but also by men, particularly Muslim men around Ramadan, as part of their worship. The surmadhan has a circular base, with a domed top both of which are decorated with repeating circular button shaped designs. At the pinnacle is a heart shaped engraved applicator that sits into a small hole to replenish when applying. Lovely curio, full of history and stories.
