This joyful pink and orange shot silk sari comes from the sacred city of Banaras (also known as Varanasi). The deliciously light and soft sari has an iridescent appearance and is decorated with gold embroidered paisley motifs and the pallu (the decorative end piece of the sari used for draping) is quite elaborate. A cotton fall (just over 10cm wide) has been stitched along the inside edge of the bottom of the sari to enhance the draping. Dry clean only.

The sari (also saree), which is a Sanskrit word meaning strip of cloth, is an iconic symbol of India’s grace and is still worn daily by millions of women. The draping and wrapping lengths of unstitched cloth dates back to ancient times. Each unique sari tells a story about the community that made it and those who wear it. There are distinct regional variations in materials, colours, motifs, embellishments and in how the sari is draped. Traditionally, the sari was hand-woven and could be worn straight off the loom. Today there is strong commitment by India’s leading designers and craft advocates to protect the sari legacy and to revive and support an Indian artisan aesthetic.
