This eclectic green, orange and pink sari is a celebration of the humble and yet ubiquitous gamcha towel. These thin hand-woven cotton towels are associated with rural men and labourers, who use them after bathing and to soak up sweat on a hot day. All gamchas feature stripes and checks, but their design and construction vary district to district throughout the country. In more recent times they have increased in status and contemporary fashion designers have embraced them, as is the case here. The dusty violet end of the pallu (the decorative end piece of the sari used for draping) is beautifully hand embroidered with large running stitches and a pompom trim. Gorgeously soft. Dry clean only.

The sari (also saree), which is a Sanskrit word meaning strip of cloth, is an iconic symbol of India’s grace and is still worn daily by millions of women. The draping and wrapping lengths of unstitched cloth dates back to ancient times. Each unique sari tells a story about the community that made it and those who wear it. There are distinct regional variations in materials, colours, motifs, embellishments and in how the sari is draped. Traditionally, the sari was hand-woven and could be worn straight off the loom. Today there is strong commitment by India’s leading designers and craft advocates to protect the sari legacy and to revive and support an Indian artisan aesthetic.
